Q: Rear window for 98 BMW z3 Roadster?
Does anybody know where I am able to get a replacement window for my 98 model BMW Z3 roadster? Would like to look around before going to BMW and paying dealer price. Cheers Nick
A: Google BMW Parts.
Q: on line free step by step installation instructions to install 97 BMW z3 roadster?
i need free step by step installation instructions to install a radiator on my 97 bmw z roadster. alldatapro.com does not work you have to be a member. thank youfor your time
A: you don't mention which engine you have as the procedure is a little different between the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder engines.
for 4-cylinder engine, this might help:
http://www.waycoolinc.com/z3/essentials/fixit/buckwalter/buckwalter.html
for 6-cylinder engine, see the following link. it is for the E36 3-series, but it is similar for the Z3 (E36/7):
http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/E36-Radiator-Replacement/E36-Radiator-Replacement.htm
The basic procedure is:
1. jack up the car
2. drain the coolant from the radiator and engine block
3. remove the engine fan
4. disconnect radiator hoses (inlet, outlet, expansion hose, and possibly the hose to the heater)
5. remove plastic frame around radiator
6. remove radiator
installation is reverse of removal. one of the most important steps is to make sure that you bleed all the air out of the cooling system when you refill the system with coolant. if you leave air pockets in the system, you will overheat the engine and possibly cause very expensive damage (e.g., blown headgasket).
Q: Do you like the BMW Z3 Roadster?
A: love the car- but not much room-not a family car
Q: Why does my transmission on a BMW Z3 roadster stops about a 1/2 inch from the motor? ?
I replaced the clutch kit and i tried putting the transmission back in place and it stops about a half inch away. We tried shaking it a little to try to make it go in and no luck. We were turning the belts in front of the motor so the teeth may align but still doesn't go all the way.Any Suggestions help. Thanks

I did use the tool and made sure it went in all the way.
Also tried lifting the motor in the front
A: spline not aligned, pilot bearing, pressure plate bolts not tight, throw out bearing not installed properly.
You should probably loosen the pressure plate and re-alignt the center point and insure the components in the bell housing are correctly installed. and ensure the pilot bearing is not bad. and that it's the right clutch kit.
Q: What is the 0-60 time of a BMW Z3 M roadster?
A: Acceleration, 0-60 mph 5.2 seconds
Q: Anyone have a hood for a BMW Z3??? Or does anyone know where I might find one? I am DESPERATE!!?
I need a hood for my BMW Z3 roadster it is 1996 1.9l but I have been told that all models of hood for a roadster or coupe will fit. please email me with anything you may have, or any leads you may be able to give me for finding one. In case anyone has anything I also need a radiator support, bumper cover, left wheel housing, left headlight assembly, right rocker panel, and window motors. (as you can tell I had a severe accident in March) PLEASE HELP ME!! thanks so much to everyone in advance.
A: Dear charity,
i believe u require a half cut body,coz u practically require radiator,condensor,condensor fan,bumper cover and many more.
I suggest u call up any half cut importers and ask for half cut body minus the engine .
it will be cheaper and your car will come out clean.
let me exactly which model your repairers wants.I will help and find for you,if u cannot find one.
take care
Q: Why is this Z3 Roadster misfiring?
BMW 1999 Z3 Roadster 2.8, misfiring on cylinder 4,5,6, and also random misfire. Have changed 3 out of 4 lambda sensors, changed all the spark plugs, even tried clearing the faults from the memory and swapping ignition coils 1,2,3, for 4,5,6. The MIL light does not come on but the codes came back as misfire on 4,5, and 6. It is running ok untill the engine gets warm and you try to boot it then you get the most awful misfire and a complete lack of power. There is also a strong smell of petrol sometimes. Could you help please its driving me crazy!!!!
Thanks for your info. its shed a bit of light on the matter. 2 of the lambda sensors pre-cat are OE but the one post cat is a generic one, this is due to the fact that the manager wouldn't listen to reason, maybe this is the problem? It does still have the bremi coils i know of this recall and would like to try the coil replacement but without knowing for sure its an expensive chance to take. Anyway it has gone to the BMW dealers workshop now hopefully we will find out what it is.
Wasn't there a software upgrade for this particular model also besides the coil problem?
Thanks for your response it has been very helpful, cheers.
I'll put what was wrong on here as soon as i find out to help others who may be experiencing this problem.
A: Code readers are OK for easy problems. But when the going gets rough by way of diagnosis, a scanner that shows live datastream is preferable. In your case, adaptations (multiplicative and additive/aka
long term and short term fuel trim) should be read. Related to this would be the MAF/airflow readings. Same thing with 02 sensor voltages (whether it is a lean misfire or otherwise).
Sans a good scanner or code reader, the most that you can do is
a) check for vacuum or air leaks (pay special attention to the crankcase vent valve/aka cyclone separator)
b) check if you are still using the recalled Bremi ignition coils (it should be Bosch by now)
c) check if the new 02 sensors are 0EM and not some cheap generic
d) check if the 02 sensor wires or coil cables have been interchanged
e) monitor fuel pressure at the fuel rail from cold to hot engine or until the misfires occur (perhaps you have a bad fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump that starves the pistons causing lean misfires)
f) check for injector pintle actuation during same periods (the injectors may be getting stuck when hot).
Other than the above, your guess is as good as mine since you have very little info to provide.
Q: Why is my BMW Z3 so sluggish?
I just purchased Z3 roadster 2.3 y. 1999 with 63.000 miles on it. I was so excited because I always wanted a convertible car. I thought that because it is just a two seater with such a powerful engine that it will have much better pick up. This car is so lazy and noisy that it is annoying. Does anybody know if these cars are like that in general or it is just mine?
A: It also weighs a lot. Are you talking about off the line? Because these cars shine during freeway passing. It's slow from a stop but if you just punch it at around 60 you will soon be in the triple digits. These cars also don't have the best BMW suspensions but they are built for braking and turning. Go and get all the fluids changed, get new air, oil and fuel filters and disconnect the battery to erase everything that might be stored in the car's computer (some of them will program itself to drive the way its previous owners wanted it to, hence the slowness). Make sure you have the radio code before doing the battery and drive it around for a week or two. If its still not as peppy as you would like look into get an E.A.T. or Dinan computer chip that should net you almost 20 horse power for a couple hundred dollars, well worth it because it really opens up your engine.
Q: Does anyone else love BMW's as much as me?
This past May, I bought a used BMW Z3 roadster, and completely love it. BMW is honestly one of the best brand automobiles you can purchase. I will always buy BMW's from now on, but I still must say I love the older design a lot better than the newer models. The older models (really anything from 03,04 in some models back) look pure german. The newer ones look more like japanese makes, but nevertheless, they are simply remarkable.
A: I think BMWs are great. I got my first one this year, and still look forward to driving in it. In terms of value, quality, and driver appeal I don't see how you can not like them.
Now I want to address something that some moron said about being patriotic and supporting America. Buying a car of any kind supports America. There is sales tax, gas tax, and ongoing service costs, along with the fact that there are thousands of Americans employed by BMW all over the country.
Let's compare that to the big American brands of Ford and GM. These great American companies are consistently following the business model of shutting down American factories and moving them to Mexico, decimating communities and spitting in the face of Americans who have often worked for these big corporations for years. Go buy a nice Pontiac and you'll see in the small print they are assembled in Mexico with parts from Canada. The only whiff of America in these cars is the fact that the parts took a train ride through America on their way to a Mexican assembly plant.
BMW, along with all the major Japanese brands have all opened plants in America and have created a massive amount of income and employment that significantly helps our economy.
What's the alternative? Ban all 'foreign' cars? Should we cut of trade relations with all countries too? Stop buying from China or Japan? Seriously, walk around your home. I expect the home was built by illegal Mexican workers, and is full of products from China and Japan. So please don't give me this bleeding heart story about buying American.
When I bought my first new car in America I did an exhaustive survey of EVERY major brand of car. I had a completely open mind. But in all the research I did, most American cars depreciate like crazy and are less reliable than Japanese counterparts. Add to that the fact that so many 'American' cars aren't even built in America these days, what's to like?
When the big American car makers will make a nice looking car, that is a good value for money, high quality, is actually built in America, is reliable and modern, and doesn't depreciate like a stone or guzzle gas like crazy, then I'll be the first in line to buy one. But until that day comes I won't buy American. I will instead buy a foreign brand that is a better car.
Don't get me wrong, I support America. But until I see the American car companies supporting America too, I see no reason to give them my business.
One final thing to the poster that talked about maintenance costs. There are none. My BMW has no maintenance costs (except new tires) for 50,000 miles. By that time, I'll have a new one. Both my bosses own Cadillacs that seem to spend more time in the shop than on the road. One of them had an Escalade and it needed a new transmission after just 20,000 miles. Not surprisingly he ditched it soon after that.
One of my friends has a Suburban. The other day the windshield wipers stuck on and he had to stop and remove the fuse from the box to stop them. He just took it in for a new water pump that ended up costing him $1,000! The car isn't even four years old. Brand new the car cost $47,000. Today it is worth $15,000 trade in. A BMW X5 from the same era would be worth $30,000 today. And I know which one would be more fun to drive.
Q: Used Miata or BMW Roadster?
Thinking of buying a used Miata or BMW z3, both convertibles, both have good consumer ratings. Beemers are a thousand or two higher in price. I'm a 40 y/o guy, is a Miata a girls car? Would you spend the extra $2K for a used BMW z3 same year than a same year Miata?
A: The Z3 comes with different engines, unlike the Miata. You don't mention what engine or year you are looking at, so it is difficult to compare HP and torque numbers. However, all BMWs have 50/50 weight distribution, or very close. The Z3 is no exception, it is not nose heavy.
HP numbers range from 138 all the way to 315, and have always been higher than Miata, even with the early 4-cylinder models. Torque is significantly higher in the Z3, especially in the 6-cylinder models. Weight is about 400 pounds more than a Miata, but the Z3 is a bigger car.
Personally, I would spend the extra money to have a more unique and attractive car.
Q: does anyone have bmw parts for...?
i just bought a 97 bmw z3 roadster i need new front fog light lense covers and other parts if you have any please write will purchase at a resonable price. already looked on ebay. if you have any other recources plase tell me thankyou.
A: Items that you can't get in an auto parts store, or from ebay are generally availble from the BMW dealer. You can check auto wrecking yards, I'm sure someone's crashed a '97 z3 that has some salvagable parts.
E-Bay isn't the only online distributor for car parts...

If you can't find your parts at any of the above, you'll have to go to a dealer.
Sorry, I'm afraid I'm fresh out of Z3 parts, myself.

Q: lawn parking legalities?
recently (on the 27th) i got a parking ticket, which i just found today (the 29th) in my windsheild wiper. on the 27th, however, my car had been parked legally on the curb, and then later was parked on the front lawn parkstrip under a tree overnight cuz id been working on it. i think yesterday i moved it into the driveway, and it is still there today. is it illegal or something to park on the lawn? i live in SLC utah, and i dont know all of the boneheaded laws they have around here, so someone help me out PLEASE! just for refrence, the car is a shiny red 2000 BMW Z3 roadster, so it tends to be a ticket magnet, tho i do my best to not park wrong/speed/do stupid stuff. help!
mebbe some sneaky cop got into my driveway and put it on for my expired parking sticker... anyways, i dont want to pay it because 1) i dont hink i did anything wrong, and 2), beleive it or not, i dont have the means to pay the ticket right now.. i just moved into a new house and am trying to get on top of that, plus bills and medical are insane.. and the roadster is mostly thanks to grammas inheritance, and smart shopping for a good used bimmer. woohoo. and i do all the repairs myself, much cheaper than a mechanic.
A: Contact the court to find out if it is illegal, or walk up to a cop and ask to see the vehicle code they sighted on the ticket and read it for your self so you know what is going on.
Q: What should I name my car?
Yes this is a bit silly, but I just got a BMW Z3 roadster and would like some fun name ideas.
By the way, he's a boy.

thats roughly what it looks like...
A: Bob Sloggin
Yeah
Q: If you could spend $500 on any car stereo which one would you pick and why? Should I get one w/a GPS?
I have a 2000, BMW Z3 Roadster. It came stocked w/ Harmon Kardon speakers & a crappy stereo (w/1disk CD changer). It melted in Houston.
I want the best of the best. BMW Stereos are way to expensive. I would choose a "Bose" but I guess, they only makes car stereos for certain car models. What about one w/a GPS? Help!!!!!!! Please
A: Well ... if you want best of the best ... $500 will not work. But for $500 you can get pretty far in terms of improving your sound.
Here are some of the things I would consider:
- upgrade speakers (Alpine Type R component speakers) $250
- upgrade the amp (mtx or rockford fosgate) $250
Then, when your budget allows:
- get an amp/sub for your trunk. Alpine Type R 12" with ported box and amp - around $600 or so
That's what I would do. I'm recommending Alpine Type R's not because they are the best, but they are the best in this price range.
For your car ... the absolute best would be MB Quart. But we're talking about several thousands of dollars. Focal is also good, but nothing beats MB Quart for pure sound quality.
As for the head unit. I'm not sure if you need to change that. Keep it as long as you can. All digital sound is the same in terms of sound quality. Upgrading your head unit may give you more features but will not improve your sound quality.
Good luck.
Q: How can I mend leather?
I drive a 2000 BMW Z3 roadster. Unfortunately, the drop-top isn't electronic, which means that I have to lift it/drop it manually (which is really easy, contrary to popular belief.) One night, I forgot to put the top up, so I kneeled on the passenger seat to reach back in order to grasp the folded up top. The leather ripped right where i was kneeling, leaving vertical gash on the bottom cushion. The leather seems too tough to stitch back together. Is stitching it feasible? or do I need to get the seat reupholstered. Also, the leather is red. Do auto-body shops carry the same shade? probably not? help me.
A: Well, I'm not sure how thick your leather is. For thin leather, it can simply be stitched like cloth, only it'll be harder. If it's thick, you'll need to get one of those fancy leather punchers, and put a hole in every spot you want to put the thread through.
